Texas Sun Safety Tips for Kids

Staying safe in the sun is very important for everyone, but this is especially true for children. Adults are old enough to know when to put on sunscreen or wear a hat, but kids often go about their business and don’t even notice how warm it is outside. As a parent of young children, it is your job to make sure that they stay safe when out in the hot Texas sun, no matter what time of year.

Obviously, summer is when we think about sun safety the most. Children and adults both like to spend a lot of time outside during the warmer months. Whether it is just a short trip to the park or all day at the pool, you need to make sure that kids are protected from the sun. The first thing that we all need to do before we even walk out the door is to put on sunscreen. Children should wear sunscreen with a high SPF to keep them well protected. If they are playing in the water outside, be sure that all exposed areas are covered and opt for a waterproof sunscreen.

Another great way to ensure your child stays safe in the sun is to make sure they are wearing the proper gear. Sunglasses are a great idea for kids as well as hats with brims that go all the way around. This will not only protect their faces, but the back of their necks as well. If your child will be out swimming in the sun, opt for swimwear that has SPF protection. Swim shirts for young boys and girls are a great way to keep them as covered as possible while in the water.

Lastly, be sure to always carry water and healthy food. No matter how long you will be out in the sun, you should have water with you and keep drinking it even if you are not thirsty. Foods that are high in water, like oranges and melon, are great to take along as well. Remember all of these tips and you and your children will stay safe in the Texas sun all year long.
